Our story

It began with one woman’s promise

A survivor’s promise

Irma beat cancer. Then she dedicated her life to feeding others.

Irma’s Angels began with Irma — a San Antonio woman and breast-cancer survivor who, after beating the disease, made a decision that would change thousands of lives: she dedicated her life to feeding people in need.

What started as a personal act of hope grew into the Irma’s Angels Project, an annual holiday effort now in its 34th year. Every season, the project assembles and distributes holiday food bags to more than 1,000 families in need across the San Antonio area.

The community knows our founder simply as Irma — a name that has become a promise in itself: that in San Antonio, no family should face the holidays without food on the table.

Today, Irma’s Angels is carried forward by the people who show up every year — the volunteers who pack bags, the donors who give what they can, and the schools and community partners who help us reach the families who need us most.

“After everything she overcame, Irma chose to spend her life making sure no one around her went hungry. That’s the heart of everything we do.”

What guides us

The values Irma started with

Dignity for every family

We believe a holiday meal should never be a source of worry. Every family we serve is a neighbor, treated with warmth and respect.

Community-powered

Volunteers, donors, schools, and local partners come together each season. No one does this alone — that's the point.

Perseverance

Our founder faced cancer and came through it determined to serve. That same stubborn hope carries the project through 34 years and counting.
